Thursday, April 24th, 2008Aside from his deplorable choice of baseball teams to follow (BTW, shouldn’t the “Yankees” be the “Nieuwe Amsterdams” or the “Pieter Minuet Culturally-Insensitive Thieves Who Stole Manhattan” and Yankees should be the name of our local, New England-based lads?), John Solom0n is a great guy:
an esteemed pundit since the age of 13
an outstanding reporter

Boston held a “planned disaster” Monday
Thursday, April 24th, 2008Amidst all the historical reenactments, Sox game (lookin’ good, boys!), and Boston Marathon, authorities also scheduled a major disaster drill in the Hub of the Universe Monday.Whoa! Was that a case of bad planning, or what? With hundred of thousands of people already milling about, weren’t the officials, as it were, looking for a disaster?
Nope.
As […]
Chertoff cyber-security plan: who will fill the post?
Wednesday, April 9th, 2008In general, I’m in support of Sec. Chertoff’s new cyber-security plan: let’s not forget that cyber-threats can be of all stripes (terrorists, organized crime, state-sponsored groups, or individual hackers), that 85% of our critical infrastructure is in private hands (hence his call for coordination with the private sector, and that the threats range from the […]
FCC & cellphone carriers get it! Targeted wireless alerts!
Wednesday, April 9th, 2008USA Today reports that the FCC may approve, as early as today, the technical standards for a nationwide system that would send text messages to cellphones and other wireless devices whenever there’s an emergency. The system could be operational by 2010, and could be used for terrorism, weather, or child abduction alerts.
That’s great: finally […]
Look to disaster management for Enterprise 2.0 inspiration
Monday, March 24th, 2008I’m in DC today, and tomorrow will be speaking at the Santa Fe Institute’s “Decisions 2.0: Distributed Decision-making” seminar.
Since I won’t have a chance to blog tomorrow, here’s my news release about my speech, will will focus on successful disaster management strategies as a model for organizations that are considering Web 2.o strategies to empower […]
Today’s sorry anniversary: Operation Rolling Blunder
Wednesday, March 19th, 2008OK, the subprime lender debacle can’t be tied to it (other than the general problem of CEO hubris, whether the organization in question is the US Government or Countrywide Financial). Â However, I’m hard-pressed to think of any other major problem in the US right now, from lousy healthcare for returning vets to underfunding of infrastructure […]
Back, with a request for your ideas on smart emergency communication tips!
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008Hi. Sorry I’ve been hors de combat for the past few weeks: my father-in-law’s quite ill, which has caused a lot of perturbations on the home front (prayers and good thoughts gratefully received!), while — on a more positive note — I’ve also been caught up in the early phases of planning what I […]
Northern Illinois U shooting: better, but authorities still don’t get it right
Friday, February 15th, 2008Just heard CNN’s legal expert say that no one could fault Northern Illinois University’s handling of emergency communications during and after the shooting yesterday.
I can: they did better than VA Tech authorities, but still not enough.
According to this story, cell phones were jammed, and students couldn’t call out or their parents call in — […]
That’s kewl: Obama says he wants exec. branch transparency
Thursday, January 10th, 2008OK — I’ll have to chat up the Obama issues folks: ran across a Wired piece about his visit to the Googleplex last fall, when, among other parts of his technology agenda, he told them he’s interested in “.. Implementation of new tools and processes to bring more transparency to the executive branch.” Better […]
Geez! Just remembered we don’t have to police Pakistan!
Friday, December 28th, 2007Totally slipped my mind (and, of course, the Bush Administration’s, if they collectively have one). There’s an organization that might mean the US wouldn’t have to automatically, unilaterally invade Pakistan if it unravels even more. If only the President had Ban Ki-moon’s phone number.
