With Hanna & Ike coming, my emergency use of Qik tip is on YouTube

By WDavidStephenson | September 5, 2008

With Hanna & Ike now barreling down on us, I’ve just posted the newest of my “21st-century disaster tips you WON’T hear from officials” videos on YouTube.

This one deals with using Qik to stream “situational awareness” to your neighbors and — if they’re clued in — local police and fire officials. As I say, as of now I think Qik is the killer app (subject to rapid revision: there’s always something new coming down the pike that will be even more helpful) to allow you and me to share real-time, location-based visual situational awareness about fast-changing disasters, terrorist attacks or other emergencies where we, not first-responders, happen to be on the scene first.HOWEVER, as I’ve also said, this is all for naught if first responders don’t begin to instinctively check Qik, (not to mention Twitter, Flickr, etc.) in emergencies. I’m trying to spread the word to the powers that be, so if you have access to any organizations such as the International Association of Chiefs of Police or their counterparts, ring ‘em up and tell them they need to book me to speak to their conferences!

Thanks, and check today whether Qik will work with your videophone (at this point it’s basically only the iPhone, a lot of Nokias and my Samsung Blackjack — but I bet that the models covered will rapidly expand, so keep checking back with them). If so, join up today, download the software, and get goin’ if Hanna or Ike hit you.
