et al.: you can go overboard on hive mind…

By WDavidStephenson | May 16, 2008

It’s been too long since I’ve commented on miscellany. Here goes!

I’ll admit that I’m second only to Edward O. Wilson in my love of ants and their sophisticated hive mind/emergent behavior (didn’t Wilson write that if humanity vanished, we’d take 2-3 species [I’m betting head lice] with us, but if ants vanished, life as we know it would cease?).

However, it does seem that things have gotten out of control in Texas, where them there lil’ “Crazy Rasberry ants” have been invading homes, businesses, and even the Johnson Space Center in search of food, shorting out critical computers controlling chemical plants, etc. (BTW, can’t help thinking this is yet another example of global warming adversely affecting habitats).

Can’t we all get along? If they leave some scraps under the picnic table, will you guys leave the computers alone?

Come to think of it, isn’t this the kind of problem that former exterminator Tom DeLay could really work on, now that he’s done with screwing things up in DC?
