Back, with a request for your ideas on smart emergency communication tips!
By WDavidStephenson | March 5, 2008
Hi. Sorry I’ve been hors de combat for the past few weeks: my father-in-law’s quite ill, which has caused a lot of perturbations on the home front (prayers and good thoughts gratefully received!), while — on a more positive note — I’ve also been caught up in the early phases of planning what I think will be an exciting project for the Wireless Foundation.
It’s a program to helping educate consumers about smart use of wireless technology when emergencies arise, either on a personal level or in a disaster or terrorist attack.
As such, the program offers the first real opportunity to test my “networked homeland security” approach to empower the general public to be full partners in disaster preparation and response through creative use of their personal communication devices (especially ones that capitalize on the increasing array of mobile social networking apps to increase the chances that “the wisdom of crowds” will emerge right when we need it most!), so I’m really pumped!
Here’s where you come in: even though I’ve got a lot of ideas, some of which have been detailed in my “21st-century disaster tips you won’t hear from officials,” and some of which are still germinating, I know you faithful readers probably have some great ones.
Here are a few questions to prime the pumps:
- how would you like to have individuals use wireless devices in an emergency
- which ways that people use wireless devices in emergencies create more problems for you?
- what are some of the most creative uses you’ve heard of for using wireless devices in emergencies?
- how could individuals actually facilitate disaster preparation and response through creative use of their wireless devices (i.e., providing situational awareness through video or photos)?
- do you know of any formal or informal networks to trade ideas on creative emergency communications?
- to whom should I speak about innovative use of wireless devices?
I’m still having problems with my comment system (hopefully solved by switching to Disqus), so you might e-mail me if you can’t post a comment.
Thanks in advance — and I’ll keep you posted on the project as it develops!
