et al.: compare Clinton and Obama CNN opening statements
By WDavidStephenson | February 2, 2008
Back by popular demand (I actually have gotten a lot of hits on my prior word clouds of Presidential campaign and bin Laden statements…), here’s a comparison of Clinton’s and Obama’s opening statements for the Thursday night CNN debate.
Obviously, in such short statements (Clinton, 104 words; Obama, 79) you ain’t gonna get any incredibly insightful looks into their priorities. However, it does appear:
- Obama wins in the obsequious references to your opponent, with 2 references each to “Clinton” and “Hillary,” vs. a paltry 1 “Barack” from Clinton
- Clinton seems most interested in “president” and “problems” (4 each), while Obama was obsessed with “country” (6 times).
- Clinton dominated the crucial “day one” category, mentioning it once, vs. zero for Obama
- as part of the evening’s general spirit of bonhomie, they evidently had agreed before coming out to give “change” a break. Neither mentioned it.
I can’t believe I’ve taken an hour on a nice Saturday doing this. I think I’d better get a life (plus it’s time to go to my town Democratic Caucus…).
