et al.: giving thanks by giving blankets
By WDavidStephenson | November 22, 2007
Dear reader: if you’re looking for a simple but effective way to show your thankfulness for the blessings we enjoy, consider “Soldiers Helping Those in Need.”
It was started by a young man temporarily assigned to my son’s unit (an incredible story in its own right, I’ll wait until he’s out of harm’s way to profile this amazing young man, what he’s already done, and what he planning for his next humanitarian venture!). Now my son’s taking it over.
According to my son:
“‘Soldiers Helping Those in Need” is an entirely grassroots enterprise to provide blankets to needy Iraqis and has already distributed over 3,000 blankets in the last 6 months. Contrary to popular belief it does get fairly cold in Iraq, especially in Northern Iraq. Thousands of Iraqis don’t have heated homes either due to impoverishment or lack of access to heating fuels and will suffer greatly during the winter.
To participate, just go to www.blankets.com/iraq-soldiers
Again, from my son:
“For just a few dollars you can make an incredibly positive impact over here. The blanket will come directly to me or my replacement when I rotate home, so you can be rest assured that the blanket will get to where its supposed to go.
“My team has already handed out over 600 blankets to needy families in the last two weeks and it’s made an incredibly positive impact in the village around our base. The website has a few pictures of members of my team helping out during a blanket mission. I will update it with more as we continue this program.
“I urge everyone to visit www.blankets.com/iraq-soldiers
-donations.html right now and order blankets and pass this information on to everyone you know. This is a perfect project for churches and social clubs. Winter is fast approaching and now is the time to make a difference.”
So eat that turkey, then demonstrate your thankfulness by helping those whose lives have been devastated by war. That, my friends, is an order! Happy Thanksgiving!
