As if we didn’t have enough already, Townsend goes looking for trouble..
By WDavidStephenson | September 10, 2007
Even if the men in the Bush Administration seem to have lost that good ol’ “bring ‘em on” swagger (haven’t heard that for a while, have we?) the women seem ready to fill the gap, witness Frances Fraggos Townsend’s remark yesterday regarding the new bin Laden tape:
“This is about the best he can do. This is a man on the run, from a cave, who is virtually impotent other than these tapes.”
Whoa. Maybe next time she sees him on the school playground, she’s gonna yell “yer ma don’t wear a hijab.”
Other than sheer stupidity and unwarranted bravado, it seems to me a remark of that sort comes from a total misunderstanding of a netwar approach. Ms. Townsend would be well advised to read any of Arquilla and Ronfeldt’s writings, and then she’d realize that a networked enemy doesn’t require a Decider who calls all the shots: it’s self-organizing and self-healing, and she’s just managed to stir the hornets.
A little less swagger and a little more performance, OK, Fran?
