Rest in peace, SFC Greg Sutton

By WDavidStephenson | June 13, 2007

I’m just back from a week in the wilds of British Columbia and Alberta, and wrapping up a white paper on networked homeland security, but felt compelled to break silence with this post.

I mark the death of SFC Greg L. Sutton, the gunner for the team my son commands in Iraq (my son was wounded, but has recovered, thank goodness!), in an IED attack on their Hummer last Wednesday.

Sgt. Sutton was either the 3500th, or 3501st US casualty in Iraq, but he was much more than a grim statistic.

He’s survived by a wife and four children, and his major goals in life were to put his children through college and buy a home for his mother. A generous man, Sutton loved to give candy to the children in Iraq (children in my church had collected the candy for him and the other members of the unit to give to their Iraqi counterparts — doesn’t that break your heart?). He had volunteered for another tour there so that a friend who was going to be part of my son’s team could retire.

Sadly, my son was helping SFC Sutton prepare his application to become a warrant officer at the time of his death. By all accounts, he would have been a great officer.

In addition to mourning SFC Greg Sutton and the other brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq, you might feel motivated on this occasion to express your perspective on this military operation and its continuation to the President and Vice-President of the United States (did I say that nicely enough?).

Read what “greenies” wrote about Sgt. Sutton, and the comments in response, in Daily Kos.
