Time to dust off my disaster tips, with hurricanes coming
By WDavidStephenson | May 23, 2007
Back-to-back whammies from the weather desk:
- The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts there will be 13-17 major tropical storms this year, with 7=10 reaching hurricane status and 3-5 of those becomin major hurricanes.
- NWS Director David Johnson and his top deputy resign because the National Hurricane Center’s research budget is being cut while an ad campaign to tout parent agency NOAA’s 200th anniversary is funded (although, in fairness, the budget cuts are disputed by NOAA).
As late, lamented Sox broadcaster Ned Martin used to say, “Whoa, Nellie!”
Appropriately, this week is “Hurricane Awareness Week,” and NWS has listed a number of good preparedness tips on its site, with emphasis on a family disaster plan.
However, these tips don’t recognize the latest communication innovations, so I suggest that you also check my “10 21st-century disaster prep tips you won’t hear from government.”
Sorry this is rushed, but my mother just went to hospital by ambulance (prayers and well wishes gratefully accepted), so I have to leave ASAP.
